Every Tuesday and Thursday after I eat apples near the river with my friend Harry and Ralph, I sometimes see that there are many people fishing under the bridge but not working. チャートの見方：まず、アメリカ英語において“完璧な発音”というものはないということを理解する必要があります。明らかに正しく聞こえる、訛って聞こえる、といった、標準の発音として受け入れられるか否かのレベルがあるだけです。アメリカには、様々な発音のスタイルや、南部訛り、ニューヨーク訛り、外国訛りといった様々な訛りがあります。このチャートは、ビジネス界のプロ、もしくはMSNBC, CNN, 60 minutesといった全国ニュースのキャスターが話す“標準アメリカ英語のプロの発音”との比較を示すものです。

Tier 1 Level 1A
98% -100%の正確さ
発音レベル：完璧 （プロレベル）
このレベルは、プロレベルのアメリカ標準英語と同等であることを示します。９８％ から１００％ の単語の発音は標準範囲内です。このレベルは平均的なアメリカの発音レベルを若干上回る程で、通常、専門教育や高等教育によって身につけられるものです。公式な場、社会的な場、プロとしての立場で話した場合、このレベルの発音は完璧なプロレベルと認識されますので、ネイティブスピーカーであるとみなされます。

Tier 1 Level 1
90% -100%の正確さ
発音レベル：完璧（標準アメリカ英語）
このレベルは標準的なアメリカ英語の発音で、90-100%は正確に理解され、アメリカ国内のどの地域でもネイティブスピーカーに理解されます。このレベルはほぼネイティブ並みといえますが、若干の外国訛りもしくは地域訛りがあることもあります。レベル１はアメリカ標準英語であり、ほとんどのアメリカ人ネイティブスピーカーもこのレベルです。
- ビジネス通用度：ほぼ例外なく全てのレベル・形式のコミュニケーションが可能です。
Tier 1 Level 2
85% -90% の正確さ
発音レベル：発音が重視される分野で問題なく業務を遂行できます。
このレベルはアメリカ標準英語と捉えられ、８５から９０％は正確に理解されます。外国訛り、地域訛りが多少見られますが、標準とみなされるレベルです。レベル２はアメリカでの標準コミュニケーションにおいて全く支障のないレベルです。
- ビジネス通用度：ごく一部の例外を除き、すべてのコミュニケーションが可能です。
Tier 2 Level 3
80% -85% の正確さ
発音レベル：とても良い。発音が重視される分野で業務を遂行できるぎりぎりのレベルです。
標準ぎりぎりのレベルです。10-20%の単語の発音は間違っており、そのうち5-10%の単語は理解しにくいか、違う意味に解釈されます。ぎりぎりで標準と捉えられますが、完全にネイティブレベルというわけではありません。外国訛り、地域訛りが若干ありますが頻繁なミスコミュニケーションの原因となるほどではありません。発音の80-90%は正確ですので、一般的なコミュニケーションにおいては十分なレベルです。
- ビジネス通用度：交渉、販売、購買、プレゼンテーション、教育といったほぼ全ての社内外でのビジネスコミュニケーションが可能です。ちなみに、このレベルを下回るネイティブスピーカーはほぼいないと言えるでしょう。
Tier 2 Level 4
70% -80%の正確さ
発音レベル：社内および公の場でのコミュニケーションで十分通用するレベルです。
15-25%の単語の発音は間違っており、そのうち5-10%の単語は理解しにくいか、違う意味に解釈されます。ミスコミュニケーションが頻繁に起こる可能性があります。しかし70-80%は正しい発音ですので、時々単語を聞き返されることがあるものの、一般的なコミュニケーションには十分といえます。
- ビジネス通用度：購買、社交の場、プレゼンテーションなどのビジネスコミュニケーションには十分です。
Tier 3 Level 5
60% -70%の正確さ
発音レベル：社内業務をはじめ、すべてではありませんが公の場でのコミュニケーションも十分にこなせます。
このレベルでは、およそ20-30%の単語の発音に間違いがあり、そのうちの10-20％の単語は違う意味に解釈され、ほぼすべての単語の発音に訛りがあります。通常、母音の間違いが大半を占めます。しかし60-70%は正しい発音ですので、発音ミスが時々はあるもののそれを大目に見ることで、相手は十分会話を理解できます。アクセントを若干修正する必要があり、時々単語を聞き返されることがあるものの、一般的なコミュニケーションには十分といえます。
- ビジネス通用度：ビジネスで十分に通用するレベル。社内ビジネスコミュニケーションや購買などの業務をこなすことができます。
Tier 3 Level 6
50% -60%の正確さ
発音レベル：社内業務はこなせますが、公の場でのコミュニケーションは推奨しません。
このレベルではおよそ40％の単語の発音が間違っており、そのうち15-25%の単語は違う意味に解釈され、ほぼ全ての単語に訛りがあります。通常、母音の間違いが大半を占めます。しかし50-60%は正しい発音ですので、発音ミスが時々はあるもののそれを大目に見ることで、相手は十分会話を理解できます。アクセントを若干修正する必要があり、時々単語を聞き返されることがあるものの、一般的なコミュニケーションには十分といえます。
- ビジネス通用度：社内業務は遂行可能です。購買や社交の場など一部のビジネスコミュニケーションが可能です。
Tier 3 Level 7
40% -50%の正確さ
発音レベル：何とか通用するレベルです。
このレベルではおよそ65％の単語の発音が間違っており、そのうち25-30%の単語は違う意味に解釈され、全体に外国訛りがあります。しかし50-60％の発音は正確ですので、相手は会話の一部を理解し、その他に関しては推測で会話が成り立ちます。ネイティブスピーカーにとっては聞き取りにくいレベルです。コミュニケーションは可能ですが、スムーズとはいえません。
- ビジネス通用度：注意が必要。限られた範囲で社内ビジネスコミュニケーションが可能です。プレゼンテーションや大勢とのコミュニケーションには適しません。また、社外との電話におけるコミュニケーションは推奨できません。
Tier 4 Level 8
30% -40%の正確さ
発音レベル：最低基準を満たしません
このレベルでは平均的なアメリカ人に理解されるのは難しいといえます。およそ８０％の単語の発音は間違っており、その５０から６５％の単語は違う意味に解釈されます。ただし文脈があればコミュニケーションは可能です。
- 注意：社内における発音が重視される職場環境では、注意すれば業務遂行は可能です。発音があまり重視されない職場環境では、業務遂行は十分に可能です。しかし、プレゼンテーションや対大勢とのコミュニケーションには課題が残ります。社内外における電話でのコミュニケーションは推奨できません。
Tier 4 Level 9
20% -30%の正確さ
発音レベル：最低基準を満たしません。
このレベルでは平均的なアメリカ人に理解されるのは難しいといえます。ほぼ全ての単語の発音が間違っており、そのうち70-80%は理解されないため、コミュニケーションが可能なのは友人や同僚などの身近な範囲に限定されます。ただし、特定の内容、状況から判断できる場合などは、聞き手は意味を理解します。推測や、聞き返し（ネイティブスピーカーが、話者の意図する単語を発音しなおす）を通じて、日常的なコミュニケーションは可能です。
- （英語でのビジネスコミュニケーションには適しません。）
Tier 4 Level 10
5% -20%の正確さ
発音レベル：理解できないレベル
このレベルでは、アメリカ人には理解されません。口頭でのコミュニケーションは、簡単な単語のやりとりやジェスチャーでのみ可能です。ほぼ全ての単語の発音が間違っており、そのうち80-90％は理解されません。英語を使いこなす能力は若干しかないといえます。特定の内容や状況から判断できる場合などは聞き手は意味を推測することができます。推測や、聞き返し（ネイティブスピーカーが、話者の意図する単語を発音しなおす）を通じて、何とかその場を切り抜けるためのコミュニケーションは可能です。

業界にもよりますが、ほぼ全ての企業や専門職の方たちは、顧客が最初に耳にする発音がその企業や専門家のイメージに影響を与えていると考えています。つまり、その企業の第一印象が、電話や受付での会話によって決まると言えるのです。企業はこの事実を重視し、それらの業務にはレベル4以上の人を就かせるようにしています。
Purchasing efficiency is different from sales. Depending on the industry, Americans and companies are more willing to accept money from a person regardless of the persons speaking ability, but if given an option, are less likely to engage in purchasing conversation or negations for goods or services with individuals that struggle with their pronunciation.
How the percentages were derived
The percentage range represents the average pronunciation clarity. Any tier person is capable of saying some words perfectly but the average of their sounds will fall into a specific range. If 100 random native American adults age 18 to 70 listened to 100 random English words without context, spoken in 80 seconds, the percentage of words the natives could accurately identify represents your pronunciation accuracy percentage.
Misunderstood words are common in English among native English speakers especially over the phone. As a result, words such as “pardon me,” “excuse me,” “what was that,” “can you repeat that,” exist and are used on a daily basis.

Q: How do you know when a person has an accent?
A: When you fairly accurately identify the region or origin of the accent. If you cannot identify this, then the speaker likely is without accent.
Accents are not necessarily bad. Accents are used to represent a characteristic, region of the country or style. Various accents are necessary in Hollywood to create a sense of reality. Accents can be view bad or negative when it interfere with ones ability to be understood or when it evokes forms of discrimination.
